Fish for Steelhead From December Through April by Drift or Jet Boat
The Rogue has a abundant return of winter Steelhead each year. Drawn out over four months makes for many opportunities to target them. With the ability to retain hatchery and wild fish this is great fishery for those who enjoy eating fresh Steelhead. Fish ranging from 6-14 pounds and can even catch some up to 20. We target them by drift boat and jet boat. Fishing in Gold Beach, Oregon and up into Merlin, Oregon or Grants Pass, Oregon area, as the run progresses.
These two rivers have a large return of wild steelhead each year. Catch and release fishing has helped maintain a healthy run of larger then normal sized winter steelhead. The South Umpqua has a great hatchery program with many fish returning each year. The North Umpqua is known for beautiful wild Steelhead. As seeing not many hatchery fish returning, makes for a great catch and release river.
Starting in the high country East of Brookings, the Chetco is a pristine river with no dams and a very active broodstock program. Big rains cause these fish to rush into the Chetco as ocean fresh as they get. Often times catching them 4-7 miles from the ocean. The Elk River is known for perfect Steelhead green water and a rainforest look surrounding the river banks. With a hatchery located on the river many hatchery fish return each year as well as some trophy sized Steelhead. Fish range from 8-15 pounds and into the 20 pound range as well. On occasion like this one pictured above!
This river is unique on its own. A small fishery with some of the meanest fish around. The Sixes River flows only a few miles from the Elk River and reciceves a bountiful return of wild winter steelhead each year.
The Illinois River is a tributary to the Rogue. These fish are a native stock with no hatchery program and some of the most aggressive fish around.
